It’s time. Time to work on those new year resolutions. If you want a little inspiration, look no further than the folks of Duryea in Pennsylvania, USA circa 1961. As for us, Madame Mitchell is thinking she might perfect the practice of folding dinner table napery into swans and Madame Dent plans to take up krumping. But if you have any suggestions for the Mesdame’s new year resolutions, go on – leave a comment. We’d love to hear them.

OK, so Apartment Therapy diehards aren’t fans, but M&D is. How could you not resist inflatable beach balls fashioned into lightshades? Thank you TOBYhouse of London for thinking outside the box, sorry ball. Mind you, banana lamps and tennis-table bat hand mirrors? Hmm.

I’ve just read a lovely interview with Tegan from Melbourne’s Ink & Spindle on Living Creatively. She says “We’re prepared for it to be fairly slow at the start. We’re young and we have stars in our eyes. We have got no mortgages and no kids, just one dog and one cat”.
I beg to disagree. How could things go slowly with design like this? M&D love the way these environmentally-conscious, super high quality, textile-printing gals think. Go see for yourself.

Beginning to look a lot like Christmas
December 18, 2009 / By Madame Dent

I couldn’t care two hoots about a partridge in a pear tree, but if my true love were to give me one of Finnish-English designer Sanna Annukka‘s wooden birds, I swear I would make him breakfast in bed every Saturday morning until next Christmas. Available mid January 2010 from her shiny new online shop.

Let us preface this post with a Mitchell & Dent design disclaimer… in our other lives as brand boffins Studio Bomba, we are so fortunate to work with energiser bunny Clara Jane. Not only is she the mother of a one year old, but she has single-handedly established not one, but two, brand new businesses.
Lad & Lass creates artworks and interiors products as shown above, wholly designed and manufactured in Western Australia. Ball and Skittle is an online emporium that carefully sources children’s play, gift and home wares that are good for imaginations, good for growing bodies, good for the environment and good for the future happiness of the world. Good for Christmas too, I’d say.

It is just ridiculous what you can find on Etsy. We spotted these beautiful wooden products by Nature Design there and fell in love. Handcrafted by a father and son team, they create kitchen products from aromatic woods like juniper, alder, cobnut and apple trees. Of course, we can’t promise they meet Australian quarantine standards, but wooden it be lovely if they did?
