Despite being from the country, a little shiver goes up my spine when I hear the words ‘country’ and ‘style’ in the same sentence. I have nightmares about knotty pine kitchens with pictures of pepperpots and geese on the tiles and I think a ‘this kitchen seasoned with love’ cross-stitch might actually make me cry. And yet, Country Living online has terribly cute upcycling ideas for old oars and tennis raquets. Love – all.

On my ‘If I win Lotto’ list is the back catalogue of John Fluevog shoes, a Saarinen chair and some Jacobson cutlery. Perhaps I should try buying a ticket?

I doubt this guy could shiver anyone’s timbers. Still wickedly wondrous though, thanks Clayton Junior from Brazil.

The wooden spoon is traditionally presented to the person placed last in the mathematics degree exam at Cambridge University. I would be top runner for this award – especially if it was a Nic Webb wooden spoon.

Ever have the urge to curl up in the corner with a box of crayons and a colouring-in book, but think it’s only for little ones? Supermarket Sarah has just the thing with these Colour Me Good books, album sleeves and paper dolls. Made by Mel Elliot – and perfect for us (not so) grown-ups.

There’s an autumn chill in the air today that reminds me of living in England. These things I miss… daffodils and crocuses, autumn leaves in Hyde Park, buying wine in the supermarket, popping over to Paris for the weekend and the opportunity to see what my friend George has done to his family home (since 1765!) – theĀ Hodsock Priory in Nottinghamshire.

I have no idea how John James Audubon managed to get his subject matter to stay still. Maybe his past profession as a taxidermist helped matters along. Prints of his beautiful paintings are available for purchaseĀ here.

Daily drop cap

I have 80% of half a new kitchen and my weekend chore was to empty the old cutlery draw into the new cutlery draw. In the midst of abandoning a decade’s worth of chopsticks, I found my long lost baby spoon and was instantly transported back to childhood. My sister’s baby spoon had a kitten on it and I was always secretly jealous, but with hindsight, I lucked out. Mine is silver and more traditional, shaped a bit like one of these beautiful bone china spoons by Caroline Swift. You can also read about her in the latest issue of Dumbo feather, pass it on. Inspirational. Glorious.
