Perth is a tricky little town for designers. Sometimes the folks that dig things out of the ground do not dig design as much as we do. But we love it here. And we don’t want to leave. So where does that leave us? Well, for Mitchell & Dent, that means ganging up with a bunch of other creative types and showing Western Australia what we’ve got. Here is just a teeny little snippet of the wedding wonderfulness on show this weekend at the first ever First Comes Love bridal fair. It is a carefully curated, design-orientated, sweet and sassy little affair with independent exhibitors, a photo gallery, on the floor fashion, live music, sweet treats and a hair and makeup lounge (book yourself a trial here). Come join?

Our chums Dan and Bec from Studio Lost & Found found this brilliant little series of dioramas with hand-lettered type by Aled Lewis in London. We love them, especially this one, and not least because Mr Lewis seems to share a similar sense of humour to us (go here and be sure to look at the back). Dumb bunnies. But as Aled says, what rabbits lack in smarts, they make up for in cute.

We first met designer gal Jennifer Berney when she worked at local brand agency Block, but then she fell in love and was whisked away to Canberra. Lucky Canberra. Look what they get… screen-printed flora and fauna wonderfulness in homewares form. Thank goodness for online shops. Check out Jennifer’s Formosa website, her blog and of course, her online shop. Unlike other online purchases from Canberra, you can look the postman in the eye when these turn up in your mailbox.

Mitchell & Dent have recently been compared to Basil Zempilas in the Perthonality stakes which is one of the loveliest compliments we have ever had. If you aspire to Heath Ledger status (probably a bad choice, but we’re going with it), you’ve got to start somewhere. We think we’re in good company and if you want to spend a weekend working your way through the best Perth has to offer in Perthonalities, blog style, start here…
1. The Worst of Perth (theworstofperth.com)
Perth is all its wonderful awfulness, thanks to Andrew.
2. Dropstitch (www.dropstitch.com.au)
Emma Bergmeier knows her fashion, even Vogue UK knows that.
3. Craftapalooza (craftapalooza.typepad.com)
Clever Nicole knows about the crafty side of Perth.
4. Kristy Leigh’s Food for Thought (www.kristyleigh.com)
Kristy Leigh’s culinary adventures (with recipes!).
5. Love Freo (lovefreo.wordpress.com)
Izzy, Orla and Phil really do love Freo.
6. Future Shelter (futureshelter.blogspot.com)
Jane and Adam design for folks worldwide, all from their studio in North Perth.
7. Cerebral Excrement (cerebralexcrement.blogspot.com)
A haiku a day keeps the sanity away, thanks lovely Elissa.
8. Perth’s Best Architecture (perthsbest.wordpress.com)
And not just the Iwan Iwanoff buildings, thanks Andrew.
9. August Animals (augustanimals.com)
Type geeks and design nerds – Russ, Mick and Tim, boys after our own hearts.
10. The Ginger Fox (www.gingerfoxvintage.com)
Tara Fox knows Perth’s best vintage, oh yay.
Apologies to all we’ve forgotten – did we mention ‘part one’, of course we did. Suggestions welcomed.

For jaded designers who have got too big for their boots, just look at this illustration from recent Canadian design graduate Jenny Kim. And her packaging. And her publication work. And her brand identity design. All ridiculously inspirational. Go Jenny.

At school I always remember making chocolate shredded wheat nests for Easter, complete with those little pipe cleaner chickens. This student’s work is a little more polished. Nina Bruun is currently finishing her masters at the Danish School of Design. I bet she will get a gold star for this.

Kev lives in West Yorkshire and digs the earth. No, he’s not a farmer (boom tish) but he makes these most wonderful notecards under the moniker Dig the Earth. As green as they can be, with 100% recycled paper stocks and environmentally responsible printing techniques, even the clear bag they are packaged in is made from corn starch and is completely biodegradable and compostable. Dig it?

Mitchell & Dent are not known for their minimalism, so we hear what you’re saying here Mr Seb Lester. If you do too, visit the UK’s Keep Calm Gallery at their little online shop.

I couldn’t care two hoots about a partridge in a pear tree, but if my true love were to give me one of Finnish-English designer Sanna Annukka‘s wooden birds, I swear I would make him breakfast in bed every Saturday morning until next Christmas. Available mid January 2010 from her shiny new online shop.
