Wilhelm Staehle frightens small children. He also enjoys taxidermy and hand-cuts silhouettes. We’d like to meet him. We think.

Sometimes people make things so frickin awesome you just want to spit. On them. And go back in time. And steal their idea. (And go mwah mwah mwah. And dream up dastardly deeds for further evil-doing. And have a really ace midcentury lair perched on the side of a gently smokin’ volcano.) Canadian illustrator Andrew Kolb made these tattoo-it-yourself cards. Bastard.

No, not The Hills, the Perth hills. The shady-sweet eucalypt-smelling Perth hills. Not a boob job or a statement handbag in sight, but there is cute shoes in common between the two – in the work of hills girl Moira Court. She is an incredible illustrator and maker that we’ve not yet had the pleasure of meeting, but her art does adorn an M&D wall. Our bear wears a crown.

We’re a little late. OK, we’re a lot late. There is no time at all to pop in to the Mitchell & Dent studio or the little online shop and pick up one of these cards for your yummy mummy before Sunday. Besides, we’re not really sure a piece of paper, no matter how lovely Madame Mitchell’s illustrations are, cuts it anyway – surely the woman who squeezed you out of her nether regions, tied your shoelaces, kissed away those falling-off-the-bicycle tears, replaced your dead goldfish/guineapig/hermitcrab so you wouldn’t be upset, helped you with your homework even though she had no clue, kept quiet about how much she hated that boyfriend with the tattoos, snuck you extra cash when your first job earned you a pittance – surely she deserves an actual cup of tea and a chitchat. Happy Mothers Day, M&D mums!

Our chums Dan and Bec from Studio Lost & Found found this brilliant little series of dioramas with hand-lettered type by Aled Lewis in London. We love them, especially this one, and not least because Mr Lewis seems to share a similar sense of humour to us (go here and be sure to look at the back). Dumb bunnies. But as Aled says, what rabbits lack in smarts, they make up for in cute.

The mesdames like music, they are partial to a toe-tapping beat and a jaunty lyric. Sometimes, however, they are shocked and appalled by the unsuitability of the album art. How nice would it be to revisit some album covers and reimagine them? Just ask Andrew Kolb, who remade the The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album cover as part of the 33.3 Art Show. And there are 32.3 others there too.

Happy new year all. I don’t know about you, but I’m not foolish enough to make new year’s resolutions such as I resolve to lose half my body weight or I resolve to drink less gin and eat less cheese or I resolve to buy less silly things like cute shoes and more sensible things like insurance. In fact, I’ve pretty much blown all three of those already. I might, however, adopt a few from Motherland’s To Resolve Project as my own. Just the prettiest ones, of course. My iPhone thanks you and your illustrator friends Chris Steger.
From top to bottom, left to right: Micah Lanier, Jon Garza, Jeremy Beasley, Tom Knight, Tymn Armstrong, Rob Hopkins, Jay Rogers and Scott Hill.

…and here’s another little sneaky peek from the SODA Gift 2010 exhibition, a tea stained ink and pencil painting by Angela Mitchell. If you are looking for that extra special Christmas gift, pop in to Gift.
