We’re a little late. OK, we’re a lot late. There is no time at all to pop in to the Mitchell & Dent studio or the little online shop and pick up one of these cards for your yummy mummy before Sunday. Besides, we’re not really sure a piece of paper, no matter how lovely Madame Mitchell’s illustrations are, cuts it anyway – surely the woman who squeezed you out of her nether regions, tied your shoelaces, kissed away those falling-off-the-bicycle tears, replaced your dead goldfish/guineapig/hermitcrab so you wouldn’t be upset, helped you with your homework even though she had no clue, kept quiet about how much she hated that boyfriend with the tattoos, snuck you extra cash when your first job earned you a pittance – surely she deserves an actual cup of tea and a chitchat. Happy Mothers Day, M&D mums!

Who knew afternoon tea could be so risqué? Dutch illustrator Esther Horchner, that’s who. Go on, live a little, abandon your inhibitions and maybe swap the Liptons for lapsang?

Teacups and chandeliers
September 20, 2010 / By Mademoiselle Michelle

My most recent kitchen tea invitation has requested that guests come dressed as fifties housewives and bring along their own teacups. A perfect excuse to treat myself to one of these marvellous Monogrammed Missus Mugs from Anthropologie (and a new dress).

Due to popular demand, Madame Mitchell created a set of perfectly pretty prints like the illustrations on our Mitchell & Dent website. Inspired by high tea and spring time, they would be a welcome addition to anyone’s mantle. Doesn’t your cat drink from vintage teacups too?

Having noticed a serious lowering in the standards of tea party etiquette of late, M&D feel the need to share their top tips for the proper drinking of tea.
- One should avoid striking the side of one’s teacup with the spoon when stirring as the sound is most unpleasant.
- One should never (ever) protrude one’s pinky whilst sipping tea.
- The spout of the teapot should always face toward the host or hostess.
- Traditional tea time is four in the afternoon, however any time between two and five is acceptable.
- A tea party is not complete without scones, cupcakes and cucumber sandwiches.
- Unattractive tea sets are simply inexcusable, especially as Fiona from Antiquitea right here in Perth has such pretty porcelain for hire (as shown above).

On the other side of the world to us, but clearly Madame Mitchell is not ready to let the warm weather go and face autumn. She has made these wonderful prints of her original ink and graphite artworks on tea-stained paper available through our little online shop Mitchell & Dent. Mind you, Madame Dent is just a little concerned about what kind of shampoo Madame Mitchell uses.

These gorgeous wooden tea sets by Jin Kuramoto are crafted using traditional Japanese spin forming, you can see how they are made here. One instance where replacing the fine china can be forgiven.

Being ladies of distinguished taste and refinement we whole-heartedly recommend you visit The Peninsula Tea Gardens at Tranby House in Maylands (Perth) for high tea. What better way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon than sampling delectable bites (no crusts of course) and sipping tea and champagne with a coterie of amicable acquaintances?
