Heeeere’s Johnny

October 4, 2010 / By Madame Dent / Make a comment

According to the Johnny Two Tone Club, today is the International Day of Sputnik and we ought to be orbiting around a vodka-based beverage of our choosing in celebration. Or drying dishes with space and Sputnik-themed tea towels (the official gift of the season, clearly). And just who is Johnny? Well, we hear tell that they are a bunch of terribly nice and terrifically creative folks with an inordinate fondness for squeegees. And our sources are rather reliable.

Venturesome

It is possible that you know I’m a fan of the work or Katie Kirk and Nate Strandberg and their design studio Eight Hour Day, lovely lovely work. Well, they’re taking their show on the road for one year and have a new blog where you’ll be able to read all about their meanderings across the USA. Tally ho, then.

La-la land

Given that my only knowledge of Los Angeles comes from movies and The Hills, I can’t quite believe that Sixth & Main‘s glorious sunshine and bubblegum images are of the same town. They’d best be careful, if these images become too popular and sought-after, I’m sure it won’t be long before Spencer Pratt starts popping up everywhere trying to get his mug in them.

In with the in crowd

August 30, 2010 / By Madame Dent / Make a comment

So, clogs are going to be big in the southern hemisphere this spring. How do I know? Because when I was home sick last week I watched daytime telly (inbetween whining and moaning and feeling terribly terribly terribly bored – not good at being sick, me). And Nicky Hilton, the font of all fashion knowledge (tee hee), said Chanel did a high-heeled clog and they were, like, the coolest thing evah. She may have meant something like this, but in my snot-laden head I imagined them to be more like these Swedish Hasbeens. Clearly, I’m so 2009.

Take me out

Apologies to all who I am about to offend – I don’t know anything about baseball, have very little desire to know anything about baseball, and could barely keep a straight face last night when I caught two US commentators on Channel Go discussing the merits of the new hotdogs added to the Phillies ballpark hotdog stands. I do however, quite like this handmade ball from Bergino. It has a map on it. And their brandmark is lovely. Feel free to complain about me… now.

On being late

June 6, 2010 / By Madame Dent / 2 comments

Madame Mitchell finds that fashionably late can easily turn into frightfully rude. But what to do if you’ve been unavoidably detained? Fifteen minutes tardiness requires a quick call with an apology and a promise to get there quick sticks, thirty minutes warrants a polite and pretty excuse, an hour’s lateness best be accompanied by trinkets to soothe tempers, and any longer demands a new clock (this lovely one is from Anthropologie) and more likely, new friends.

Madame Dent is none too concerned, she finds the fun doesn’t start until she gets there.

Let them eat cake

Thank you Martha Stewart, Rochelle Adonis and I am baker, you have just made it that much harder for brides to be to choose their wedding cake. I say, why not have all three?

Enchanted, I’m sure

Marisol Spoon are a mister and missus living in NYC. I’m surprised. With the fairytale sweetness of their wonderful work, I was certain they lived in a gingerbread cottage in the misty mountains, surrounded by frolicking foxes and cavorting kittens, dining on strawberries and drinking dandelion wine.

Eek

Milwaukee’s Erin Paisley is quite possibly the sweetest, most self-effacing illustrator I have ever come across. Describing her work, she says “I’m terrible at planning things out”, “when I sit down to draw, I have a big eraser by my side”, “I usually don’t know what my drawings will be” and “I pretty much just belly flop into everything I do and hope for the best (I was never very good at diving either…)”. And then she makes works like these!

One green bottle

So. Here at M&D we are completely addicted to Pinterest (more about that in the days to come), but this is how the wonderful web works… the very clever Dana Hughes, interior designer in Sydney and creator of the inspirational design blog Yellow Trace (go! see!), posted these amazing hand blown glass bottles by New York designer Elizabeth Lyons on Pinterest and we fell in love with them and posted them for you to see. We love the internets.
