I think you know by now that when we go all quiet on the tittle tattle front, it means that Mitchell & Dent are making things. Big things. And this one’s a doozy. So, you know Mitchell & Dent is a Studio Bomba initiative right? Studio Bomba is the little design engine that drives all of the things we do – things like M&D, First Comes Love Bridal Fair and our work for other people’s brands too.

Well, now there is a Studio Bomba Shop. A bricks and mortar shop in Oxford Street that peddles stationery, artwares and designery knick-knacks. You can come see the Mitchell & Dent stationery (without having to make an appointment) and lots of local and overseas deliciousness that only the Bomba shop stocks. We think it is worth a visit (but we might be biased).

Oh, and by the way, how lovely are these images by our studio-mate Nic Montagu?

From times gone by

March 15, 2011 / By The Mesdames / 1 comment

We at Mitchell & Dent think that if young people skipped from reading Judy Blume directly to Lesley M.M. Blume, all would be well with the world. An advocate for bringing back the ‘forgotten-yet-delightful, chic, useful, curious and otherwise commendable things’; Ms Blume is a gal after our own hearts with a love of manners, mail and monogrammed coat linings. OK, perhaps we weren’t such big fans of that last item until she made mention of it, but we sure-as-heck are now. Mademoiselle Michelle’s favourite suggestion is to bring back elevator operators, Madame Dent votes fresh flowers as hair adornments and Madame Mitchell opts for Tipsy Parson. You’ll just have to read the book to find out what that is, sorry, was.

Fontastic

January 19, 2011 / By Madame Dent / Make a comment

If you hate Comic Sans like we hate Comic Sans, you might just love this book. It is not just for design geeks with an inordinate fondness for fonts (and yes, it does tell you when and why you should say ‘typeface’ instead of ‘font’ and why designers get all finicky about it). It is an easy entertaining read about why Helvetica has taken over the world, the outrage caused by Ikea abandoning Futura and the very strange sexual proclivities of Eric Gill.

Bookity book book

Pip Lincolne from Meet Me at Mike’s is super ace. When Miss Gem and the mesdames rocked up on her doorstep unannounced, instead of telling us to sod off, she invited us in for tea and brownies and a sneaky peak at Project Yellow Box. That kind of kindness deserves to be paid back in kind, so we heartily recommend you visit the Meet Me at Mike’s shop in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in Melbourne. Or Pip’s blog if you haven’t stumbled across it already (and if you haven’t, where have you been hiding yourself?!). We also love her first book of crafty projects (pictured above) and are excited to hear that her second book Sew La Tea Do is not far away.

The bottom of birdcages

June 18, 2010 / By Madame Dent / 5 comments

Madame Mitchell is a modest maiden of sorts, not normally prone to gossip and gloating, but is so terribly excited to be featured in the style issue of tomorrow’s West Weekend magazine that she is happy to let it be known.

But so you know the mesdames will not be setting themselves above their station in life, Madame Dent is happy to point out that by Sunday we’ll be in the bottom of birdcages (which won’t be a bad thing if they are as pretty as the ones in this photograph featured on The Style Files).

Swallowed a fly

May 13, 2010 / By Madame Dent / 1 comment

Getting up this morning I felt like Dr Foster who went to Gloucester in a shower of rain. Walking out my front door, my muddle was definitely in danger of getting a little soggy. This is not a smooth segue, but what about this great picture book of another children’s rhyme ‘There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly’? Mutt Ink, you sure do brighten a dull day (see what I did there, it all comes good in the end).

Frankie, my dear

April 21, 2010 / By Mademoiselle Michelle / 1 comment

We had a sneaking suspicion that the latest Frankie might have been out when we started getting a flood of orders for our Small Prints. Now that our suspicions have been officially confirmed, we’re watching our mailbox eagerly so we can take a peek. Flick your copy of issue 35 to the Frank Bits section to find a little snippet about yours truly.

Born with a silver bone china spoon

April 12, 2010 / By Madame Dent / Make a comment

I have 80% of half a new kitchen and my weekend chore was to empty the old cutlery draw into the new cutlery draw. In the midst of abandoning a decade’s worth of chopsticks, I found my long lost baby spoon and was instantly transported back to childhood. My sister’s baby spoon had a kitten on it and I was always secretly jealous, but with hindsight, I lucked out. Mine is silver and more traditional, shaped a bit like one of these beautiful bone china spoons by Caroline Swift. You can also read about her in the latest issue of Dumbo feather, pass it on. Inspirational. Glorious.

A pop up place

March 25, 2010 / By Madame Dent / Make a comment

My dad used to say I live in books. With this one I actually could. If I were a tiny little mouse. And didn’t mind a draft. Or someone closing it and getting squished to bits. Thanks Present & Correct.

Picture books

March 11, 2010 / By Madame Mitchell / Make a comment

Sheffield lass Su Blackwell knows how to create pictures with words. These miniature dioramas are delicately formed from old books carefully sourced from second-hand bookstores. These sculptures are like pop-up picture books for adults. No touching.
