I think you know by now that when we go all quiet on the tittle tattle front, it means that Mitchell & Dent are making things. Big things. And this one’s a doozy. So, you know Mitchell & Dent is a Studio Bomba initiative right? Studio Bomba is the little design engine that drives all of the things we do – things like M&D, First Comes Love Bridal Fair and our work for other people’s brands too.

Well, now there is a Studio Bomba Shop. A bricks and mortar shop in Oxford Street that peddles stationery, artwares and designery knick-knacks. You can come see the Mitchell & Dent stationery (without having to make an appointment) and lots of local and overseas deliciousness that only the Bomba shop stocks. We think it is worth a visit (but we might be biased).

What’s in a name? Well, you could ask Shakespeare what the blazes he was banging on about, or you could ask Emma Lamb. She makes the awesomest modern-vintage (work that one out) crocheted garlands and goodies – and names them all. Wouldn’t you like to take home a Daisy or an Esme? Or a Flora or an Edna? I don’t know how they smell, but they sure are sweet.

These delightful little vessels are bud vases. They are made by Cynthia Vardhan. In fact, I’d be inclined to say they are so darn pretty they shouldn’t be sullied by that single-stemmed rosebud your cheap-ass boy bought you from the man with the green plastic bucket and the red-devil teddies while you were sharing a honey chicken and salt and pepper squid at Uncle Billy’s. But that’s just me.

I can be really grumpy about the city. The roadworks make me grumpy. The fact that I need to take out a loan to pay for parking makes me grumpy. The black and grey-suited terrace people make me grumpy (since when is wearing colour a sin?). Leaving half an hour early to account for rainy-day peak-hour traffic and getting there in eight minutes makes me grumpy. Thank goodness for the glory of Venn, home to warm coffee and sellers of this cosy clock, for making me less grumpy. Quite chipper in fact.

I love the internet, but sometimes she is a cruel mistress. She lets us chat to friends and family worldwide, she lets us view art on walls tens of thousands of kilometres away, she tells us about the world and what wonderful things are happening in it AND THEN she shows us incredible furniture by Dutch folks Slow Wood knowing we can’t possibly buy it in Perth. Tease.

Fine are in Sweden and make some mighty fine things. I don’t know how, but don’t you think these fine cutting boards (above) and these fine blocky-stripey things (below) go together just fine? The mesdames are not minimalists, in fact we are probably maximalists. We are very fond of knick-knacks, bric-a-brac, gewgaws and gimcracks. Bits and pieces, odds and ends, Oxford commas, and using five words when one would do. So for folks who twitter on a bit like we do, these completely useless but utterly lovely wooden birds in boxes might like to come to your home to roost?

I live in a street that is being messed about with by developers so that lovely little old cottages like ours (built in 1905) are bulldozed to make way for multi-story townhouses. It makes me feel really miffed. I’m also mad about the bevvy of builders and their noisy morning machines. Why do they insist on starting at 6-something, even on a Saturday? I’m just like these guys – very angry little wooden wrestlers by The Boy Frost. Except for the diamond daks.
