You can’t imagine how exciting this is. Having been kindly invited to join the clever crafty gals of the Cotton Club, I needed a project, stat. With distant memories of my Granny’s aprons and bolster cushions in mind, and this perfect online pic of an old McCalls pattern (sadly, no instructions), I thought I’d give gingham smocking a go. How hard could it be? Quite hard, it seems. I did manage to work out this pleaty bit, but how does that criss-crossy bit work? Hmmm. All comments most gratefully received.

What a lovely start. Turns out I had some smocking links bookmarked.
1. This tutorial doesn’t have any pics, but says:
“If you choose to make a smocked pillow, you can be confident that no one else in your neighbourhood has the same style.” http://www.ehow.com/way_5669490_instructions-gingham-smocked-pillows.html
2. However, this one explains hand smocking so much better (and has pics):

But. Can you be confident that no one else in your neighbourhood will have the same style?
